Most Baton Rouge neighborhoods pick one thing to be near. Santa Maria residents live inside a rare corner of 70810 where three anchor destinations sit within a ten-minute drive of the front gate, and any one of them would justify the address on its own.
That is the argument of this guide. Not that there is stuff to do near Santa Maria, which any resident already knows, but that the specific density of stuff, the fact that a championship course, a 103-acre swamp preserve, and a 440-acre botanic garden complex all cluster around the same two zip codes, is unusual enough that a full weekend can happen without ever merging onto I-10.

7 a.m., Saturday: the tee time inside your own subdivision
Santa Maria Golf Course opens the weekend at seven, which is early enough to finish eighteen before the July humidity settles in. It is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. layout, now operated by BREC after starting out as a private club, and the walk-up price is one of the honest bargains in East Baton Rouge Parish. Green fees with cart typically run in the $36 to $52 range depending on tee time and day, which sits well below what the private clubs on either side of Airline charge for guest play.
The layout matters because it is why the neighborhood exists. Fifteen lakes wind through the property, oaks frame the fairways, and the Spanish-style clubhouse anchors a par-5 finishing hole that ends right where the neighborhood begins. Residents get the visual amenity every day. The tee time is optional.
Late morning: swap the fairway for the boardwalk
Six minutes northwest of the clubhouse, the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center sits on 103 acres that Baton Rouge somehow forgot to develop. Over a mile of boardwalk crosses cypress-tupelo swamp and beech-magnolia hardwoods. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for kids, which is the price of a coffee at any of the newer places on Perkins Road.
The exhibit building is 9,500 square feet, air-conditioned, and full of live animals, which is the answer to "what do we do with the kids at 11 a.m. in August." The recurring calendar is worth learning:
- Storytime at the Swamp, weekday mornings 10:30 to 11:30, aimed at toddlers
- Swamp Bird Walks, 7 to 9 a.m. on scheduled weekends
- Dog Day at the Swamp, the one day the no-pets rule lifts and you can bring the retriever onto the boardwalks
- Flashlight Tours, $5, evening programs when the alligators, owls, and frogs run the property
Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 9 to 5, Sunday noon to 5, closed Monday. Last admission to the trails is 4:15 p.m., which catches out-of-towners every time.
The Highland Road corridor, now that the barrels are gone
For most of 2025 into spring 2026, the trip down Highland toward Perkins Road meant orange barrels, lane shifts, and the slow crawl past construction crews. That is over. In early May 2026, city officials told WBRZ the resurfacing project was down to restriping and punch-list items, and Meltdown Snowballs owner Zein Clayton confirmed foot traffic was recovering.
For Santa Maria residents, the practical change is that the corridor between the neighborhood and Bin 77 at Highland Park Marketplace, the closest upscale wine bar and small-plates room to the front gate, is finally a five-minute drive again instead of a barrel-slalom. If lunch after the swamp means small plates and a glass of something, Bin 77 is the default. If lunch means a snowball for the kids and coffee for the adults, Meltdown is on the same corridor and now easier to park at than it has been in a year.
Afternoon: 440 acres at Burden
Head east from Highland and Essen and you reach the third anchor. Burden Museum & Gardens is 440 acres in the middle of the city, and it is free. Trees & Trails offers three miles of walking paths through the Burden Woods. The Rose Garden, Children's Garden, and All-America Selections Display Garden collect enough variety to fill a full afternoon. Windrush Gardens, the formal grounds of the old Burden family estate, is the quiet corner where the picnics happen.
Two things worth knowing about Burden in 2026. First, the property opened a new welcome center this summer, which was covered by the LSU Reveille in June and gives visitors an actual orientation point instead of the previous "wander in from the parking lot" system. Second, the LSU Rural Life Museum on the same property was named to the British Museum's list of the top ten outdoor museums in the world, which is a claim most Baton Rouge residents would not guess about a museum they can walk to from a Santa Maria driveway.
The recurring programming is dense enough to plan a year of Saturdays around. Birding at Burden runs one Saturday a month, 7 to 9 a.m., $12.51 per person, and covers a property where 320 bird species have been recorded. Music in the Gardens brings live music into the Orangerie Garden in the spring and summer months. Louisiana Lights runs November 27 through December 30 and turns Windrush into an illuminated walk. Poinsettias & Prosecco, the 21-and-up evening fundraiser, is scheduled for November 19, 2026.
